On February 28, 2017 the second edition of the Nuclear Careers Day was organized at the Royal Academy for Sciences and Arts in Brussels. The SCK•CEN Academy for Nuclear Science and Technology joined forces with the main players in the Belgian nuclear industry, governmental organizations, research institutions, universities and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). The event aimed at informing science and engineering students and young professionals about advanced education and job opportunities to support a career in nuclear, in Belgium and at international level.
The day started with an overview of advanced education and career possibilities in Belgium and international career pathways at the IAEA. Afterwards inspiring testimonials were given by three professionals working in the nuclear sector: in healthcare, decommissioning and research. During the walking lunch, effective networking and information exchange took place when the participants visited the fair with booths of Belgoprocess, Engie, FANC, IAEA, the JRC of the European Commission, KU Leuven, Mirion technologies (Canberra BNLS) NV, NIRAS/ONDRAF, Rad4Med, SCK•CEN and Westinghouse.
In the afternoon, two buses took the participants to the sites of Belgoprocess, SCK•CEN and the University Hospital in Leuven for interesting technical visits. The day was concluded with a presentation of the activities of the Belgian Nuclear Society and its Young Generation during a networking drink.
About 80 participants joined us during this day. The potential of the broad nuclear sector for young scientists and engineers was highlighted, with specific opportunities in decommissioning and waste management, healthcare applications, radiation protection and (research) reactor safety and technology.
